Inventory Strategy Reduces Delivery

Every day, manufacturers across the world face supply chain issues that cause serious delays in project timelines and getting products to market. Whether it’s a shortage of components or long shipping delays, we have all had to pivot and adapt to new circumstances.

In the early months of 2020, Orbitform worked to create and implement an inventory strategy to better support our customers. This included stocking a small quantity of the different models of our standard powerheads. As we moved through the pandemic and into this current phase of supply chain issues, this strategy has proven to be a positive investment that has supported many of our customers.

Recently, a machine builder had purchased three M-240 powerheads from us for an upcoming project with a fast-approaching deadline. We were able to ship these three heads quickly, but shortly after receiving them, the builder made a devastating discovery that they actually needed a total of six powerheads for their project. They issued an order for three more powerheads right away and asked us what we could do to ship these to them as soon as possible.

Understanding their urgency, we checked our inventory levels and found that we had several standard powerheads on our shelves. Because their project did not require any extra options or accessories, the only component we needed to make was the peen tool that was custom to the end product. We were able to ship the three powerheads they needed within one week – a process that would normally take 3 to 4 weeks if we had to build the powerheads from the ground up.

There are many factors that can impact lead time for equipment, including added accessories or custom tooling. Although we may not be able to meet every expedited delivery request, our stocking strategy continues to support customers during emergency situations and helps to reduce lead times on larger projects.

Orbitform understands the supply chain challenges that manufacturers are facing because we are facing them too. With a constant focus on continuous improvement, we are always looking for ways to mitigate the impact of these supply chain issues, not only on ourselves but on our customers as well. Contact us today to discuss how we can help you overcome your supply chain challenges.
